Calculating pot odds

Could you please explain why when calculating pot odds we include the amount for us to call in the total pot size? In other words, if the Villain's bet is 100, there are SB & BB of 75 in total and it costs the Hero 100 to call, is it not the case that the Hero is risking 100 to win 175 rather than 275 (which also includes the amount that the Hero needs to call the Villain's bet)?
