Could I adjust pre-flop multiplier based-on presumed effective stack?

  • BaronVonCheckRaisen (Ann Arbor, MI)

From the question How do you determine the effective stack with multiple stacks in the game?, there are some very helpful thoughts regarding how to anticipate what the effective stack is likely to be pre-flop taking into account players yet to act behind us. I think this is addressed in the answer to the question (i.e., part of the answer is, "This could mean from hand to hand that you are executing separate strategies as players in front of you fold") but I want to be certain...Would you adjust your pre-flop opening/raising multiplier back-and-forth on a hand-by-hand basis depending on different 'anticipated effective stacks'?

For example, say I'm in EP3 with 100BB, it folds around to me, I have a hand within my opening range, and MP1/MP2/HJ each have 50BB while CO/Button/SB/BB each have 100BB. Here, I would lean toward saying that, given the overall composition of the players left yet to act, 100BB (deep stacked) is the 'anticipated effective stack' and I would raise, say, 5BB (assume that 5BB has been effectively thinning the field to one or two players). Now, say I've moved to the CO with the same 100BB, it folds around to me, I have a hand within my opening range, and Button/SB/BB have the same 50BB each as before...Now, given the overall composition of the players left yet to act, I am looking at a 50BB 'anticipated effective stack'...Would I, therefore, consider adjusting my opening multiplier downward (say, to 3 or 4BB) since the game is, in this moment, in essence, medium stacked?

I am constantly adjusting my multipliers in MTTs in order to account for the overall depth of the tournament at any given time, however, I am not adjusting as, perhaps, I should (once I've found the general appropriate field thinning multiplier) in cash game (or hand-by-hand in MTTs) even when given the differing situations such as those that I crafted above.

Thanks!
