Mid Tournament WSOPC Hand, to raise or to call, and how much

  • 111Jackhammr318 (Westside, CA)

This is a hand a member of my poker mastermind group played, and 3 of us had different reasons for different plays in this spot.

Player 1:

I raise, and likely jam here. I have a 12 out draw, and there is 7900 in the pot. I have 40-50% equity against a call heads up, and I can apply a lot of pressure to the opener. This CO flop raise is strong, but the CO has 11,300 behind so I can apply a lot of pressure on their tournament life, and this player can impact my stack less when they call. To call, Hero is getting 2500:7900 or 2.6/1 odds..needing only about 30% equity. But the action isn't closed, and Hero only has 25% hand odds to improve (probably safe to assume Th9h is behind here, and a T or 9 will not improve Hero's hand to a winning hand at showdown).

Player 2:

I call here, due to the A on the flop, hitting the opener's continuing range...and due to the fact that the CO who raise is likely not folding...so reduced fold equity. If there wasn't an A on the flop, the 3bet from BB could be a better move, but overall in these mid level tournaments, BB has little fold equity if they shove against the flop raise.

Player 3:

I played this hand, and I called, although I see the merits of raising. I have a good draw, and I felt that I had the odds to continue, as the table dynamics made me feel like I could see a river pretty cheaply or for free on most turn cards that I don't hit. I also call due to the CO flop / raise, and I am likely getting called if I raise and I am behind when called.

I am player 1, but maybe I am too aggressive. I actively seek spots like this to acquire large pots uncontested, or with uncapped equity or robust equity when called. The A on the board is not ideal, and I would be more prone to BB 3bet jamming here if the top cards with a Q or J...and of course if my T and 9 were overcards to the board with the same draws.
