Pocket 5's from the big blind in an online tournament

  • Galen (Tioga, TX)

I was in an online tournament. I had noticed both MP1 and the Button tended to always call if they had bet, raised or called pre-flop even if there was more than one raiser after they got chips in the pot.

I had 34 big blinds and was in the big blind.  MP1 had about 28 big blinds and the Button had about 36 big blinds.  The blinds are at 30/60 with no ante.

I had pocket 5h5s from the big blind.  It folded to MP1 who made a min raise to 120.  The button called.  I ended up calling. The flop came 3dKs10d. With the tendency I noted and the fact that a standard sized raise to 8BB would be about 25% of my stack, I decided to play it speculatively since the bet was less than 5% of the effective stack and there was one other caller.

I then folded on the flop when MP1 made a pot sized bet.

Was calling and playing this speculatively pre-flop the best play?  Or should I have raised pre-flop in this situation?
