Playing in a deep stack tournament over the weekend and ran up against the following situation.
8 handed table, blinds at 300/600 with a 50 ante.
Folds to me on the button with pocket 8’s. I have 30 BB to start the hand. I raise to 2k which normally would be a little rich but min raises had not been getting the job done and the villian in the BB had been a bit sticky and neither the SB or BB had shown a tendency to 3 bet. SB has about 90 BB and BB has about 60BB.
SB folds, BB calls and flop comes 5 7 9 rainbow.
BB leads out for 5k. At this point, I felt like calling was not an option as I was not getting the right pot odds. So if I raise, the only option is to shove given my remaining stack size.
Things I considered were that I had observed villian had been calling wide and betting aggressive light on a number of occasions and had either sucked out with wired combos or showed complete air post flop. Also, I felt like my 8’s were a great blocker to any straights and if I jammed I had a fair amount of fold equity given villains history.
So, I jammed and went all in and villian called with pocket 10’s which held up and I busted out.
As I’ve had time to think about it and do hand analysis, poker cruncher would tell me it was a fold given a reasonable players range but given player specific info I think this was a good aggressive move that did not work out given they had an over pair with also a gut shot and that happens sometimes.
Any and all advice is appreciated as I continue to work on having controlled aggression in the right spots.
