Was it correct to bet the river?

As I think about this hand, it does not seem like any hand that I had beat would have called a bet on the river. Should I have considered that the villain might have been building a pot throughout the hand with a better flush draw? If he had hit a better flush on the river and decided to slow play it, I might have lost my entire stack. In retrospect, maybe it would have been safer to just check the river. I still wonder about hitting a flush with suited connectors and losing to a better flush.
