When we button straddle is it better to raise or fold a speculative hand?

Example: We have J9s. 100bb effective stacks we straddle on the button 2 bb. We get a middle position call. and both blinds call. Is it better to check and continue w/ 2pair or 8 outs only. Or is if better to raise and thin the field or maybe pick up 6 BBs?. Would the answer change if the small blind folded in the same situation?
