Should I c-bet vs 2 Villains with a stack to pot ratio of 2.7?

  • donthomasj (Silver Spring, MD)

I did not play this hand (it was played by another player who asked about an opinion about it); I thought it presented an interesting situation.

Cash game, 1-3

Hero on BU with $200 (not sure whey Hero wasn't topping off stack); Hero is the effective stack: JhJd

Preflop: EP3, MP1, MP2, MP3, CO limp; Hero raises to $20 and gets called by BB; then folded to HJ who calls; CO folds.

Flop: (pot = $66 after rake, SPR 2.7) AdQhQc, both Villians check. What should hero do?

LearnWPT default strategy is to c-bet. Vs two OOP Villains with wide ranges who have less range advantage than Hero on this board, a c-bet of around $60 with an SPR of 2.7 seems about right.

However, this seems like a huge commitment of one's stack in this hand (total of $80 of a $200 beginning stack). If either Villain were to call, I'm done with the hand unless my hand improves; I'm folding if c-raised. Is there a good argument for checking the flop rather than c-betting?

At what SPR vs one and vs 2 Villains do you stop c-betting with our default strategy in Cash Games? (assume you were called by a medium stacked opponent).

Note: I feel that the best play of this hand would have been to keep stack topped off at $300 and calling instead of raising since there was an EP limper and with 5 total limpers would give JJ fantastic implied odds to call for set value. Also, as played, Hero would have been better to raise bigger preflop (such as to $25, to try to get just one caller or take down the pot all together).
