Traditional Bounty Poker Tournaments

Take a deep dive into the traditional bounty poker tournament format and learn how professional poker players adjust their play to account for the bounties when making decisions at the table.

Binger’s Bounty Equity Shortcut for Calling All-Ins:

• Convert the bounty to tournament chips based on percentage of buy-in
  • $1,000 buy-in tournament, $250 of each buy-in is the bounty (bounty is 25% of buy-in)
  • 10,000 in starting chips x 25% = 2500 in tournament chips
  • Therefore 1 bounty = 2500 in tournament chips
• Add the value of the bounty in terms of chips to the total pot
  • Ex: Pot size 17,500 + 2,500 = 20,000 bounty adjusted pot size
• Calculate your equity based on the bounty adjusted pot size
• Your calling range will naturally be wider based on the increased pot size

Progressive Knockout (PKO) Tournaments

Progressive Knockouts, or PKO’s have become very popular in online poker because of the escalating values for each player’s bounty as they eliminate others from the tournament. While this style of tournament is not common in live poker, it’s incredibly popular online and you need to be aware of the strategic adjustments involved.

The buy-in structure for a Progressive Knockout splits the buy-in in half and assigns half to the prize pool and half to the player’s individual bounty. As the tournament progresses you knock players out, half of their bounty is yours to keep, while the other half is added to your bounty.

Remembers these tips when playing in a PKO Tournament:

• Because bounty values change based on each player's number of knockouts, some players are worth much more than others to knock out
• Players are incentivized to widen their ranges and go after opponents when they have a high bounty value
• Start PKO Tournaments on time and avoiding late registration is critical to maximize your chances of winning the most bounties
• It's often profitable to call with any 2 cards in PKO Tournaments when your opponent's bounty value is high
• This style of tournament has become extremely popular over the last year because it encourages so much action!

Lottery Style Bounty Poker Tournaments

The most recent innovation in tournament bounty poker that has caused great excitement among poker players is the Lottery Style Bounty Tournament.

In this type of event (more commonly known as a Mystery Bounty or Bounty Confidential) players who make Day 2 and eliminate a player draw an envelope with the bounty amount hidden inside. Bounty amounts range from slightly less than a buy-in, all the way to 50 times the buy-in based on the total number of tournament entries.

To maximize your chances at grabbing a massive bounty there are specific strategy reminders you should be conscious of during your next Lottery Style bounty event. 3 Lessons from LuckyChewy on Lottery Style Bounty Tournaments:

➧ Lesson #1: Making Day 2 in a Lottery Style Bounty Tournament is very important, but getting there with a big stack is critical to maximizing return on investment. Take thinner edges on Day 1 and focus on spots to accumulate chips before you reach the money so that you can have a better shot at accumulating bounties once you are in the money.

➧ Lesson #2: Bounties usually make up roughly one third of the prize pool. They are of most value when the average bounty amount in dollars is larger than the minimum cash and quite a bit larger than any pay jumps. Keeping track of which larger bounties have been won already is essential to making the highest expected value decisions in these types of events.

➧ Lesson #3: As the average bounty value decreases and you get deeper in the tournament where the prize money and associated pay jumps in the actual prize pool are larger than the average bounty amount, winning a bounty should be much less of an important factor in your decision making. Where previously you might have made a thin call to potentially win a huge bounty, you should instead evaluate this spot in terms of your overall tournament.

The final week of the 2024 WSOP and Summer Tournament Season concluded with more fun and cashes from Team LearnWPT.

During the exciting 7 week stretch we got to sweat 13 final tables, see two LearnWPT Students each take down their 1st Gold Bracelet, and two Instructors add hardware to their already accomplished trophy chest. We also took home nearly $2.1 Million dollars in well deserved earnings.

This summer Team LearnWPT achieved:

What's up next for Team LearnWPT? The WPT® World Championship Festival at Wynn Las Vegas this December! We'll be busy getting LearnWPT Students prepared to play better poker and win big at Wynn Las Vegas.

The second ever WPT World Championship Festival at Wynn Las Vegas set the standard for all future poker festivals with almost every event crushing the guaranteed prize pools and multiple players walked away with over $1,000,000 for their efforts.

During the 2023 Festival Team LearnWPT saw huge results including LearnWPT Member Bob Buckenmeyer who made the WPT Prime Championship Final Table and Instructor Andrew Lichtenberger who final tabled the flagship $40M GTD WPT World Championship.

LearnWPT Instructor Tony Dunst took to the online felt last weekend to win his third career WSOP Bracelet!

Tony captured WSOP Bracelet #3 and the $134,888 1st place prize after outlasting the 2,435 entry field in the $500 No-Limit World Series of Poker Deepstack Online Event #15. After a hard fought 13 hour battle of online play through a massive field stacked with Pros and online grinders the remaining 8 players reached the final table.

Just as the sun was rising over the Las Vegas Valley, the last hand of heads up play with his opponent “vevere” was dealt, and the marathon session ended with Tony securing WSOP Bracelet #3.

Week 4 of the WSOP brought our 2nd WSOP Bracelet of the Series!

The 4th week of the WSOP in Vegas drew to an exciting conclusion with LearnWPT Student Sean Jazayeri winning his 1st Gold Bracelet, battling a field of 3,362 opponents, and taking home $368,025!

Sean started Day 4 of the $1,000 buy-in WSOP Super Seniors event third in chips, showed patience and played fearlessly in the endgame to emerge as the victor in an exciting heads up duel. This is Sean's third 2024 WSOP cash which is also his largest-ever WSOP cash and the 2nd biggest of his poker career.

Sean recently attended the LearnWPT Launch Workshop with Tony Dunst, Eric "Rizen" Lynch, Michael "Gags30" Gagliano, Johan Schultz-Pedersen, and Adrian Naggy to prepare for the WSOP and we're incredibly proud of his success.

WSOP Week 2 Achievements

Week 2 of the WSOP brought our 1st WSOP Bracelet of the Series!

Long-time LearnWPT Student Timothy "T.J." Murphy took home his first WSOP Bracelet outlasting a huge field of 4,732 runners and banked an impressive $368,977 for the win.

T.J. roared into the Final Table as the chip leader and showed zero fear while using his huge stack to eliminate 6 of the 8 remaining players on his way to victory. Entering heads up play with a big chip advantage, it only took a few hands for T.J. to finish it out.

T.J. puts in the work everyday on LearnWPT.com and we are so happy to see it paying off! He’s submitted hundreds of hands to our Ask A Pro forum for analysis and trains constantly on the WPT GTO Trainer. Floating: verb
float·​ing \ ˈflō-tiŋ \

1) To call a bet as the In Position player with the intention of taking away the pot on a later street using aggressive action. This is often done with a hand that has not connected with the board in any way.

Example of Floating in a Sentence:
Brian raises preflop to 1500 in Middle Position with A♥K♦ and Johan calls on the Button with J♣T♦. On the flop of 9♥7♥4♦ Brian c-bets 2200. Johan chooses to Float with two overcards that also have a backdoor flush draw plus gutshot straight draw and calls 2200.

Fold Less, Float More!

Long-time LearnWPT Member Bob Buckenmayer navigated the record-breaking field of over 10,500 entrants in the $1,100 buy-in WPT Prime Championship at Wynn Las Vegas to eventually bow out in 5th place for a massive 6-figure score of $380,000.
